More reasons to put recruiting videos on Youtube
March 19, 2008 at 8:06 am | In Youtube recruiting tips | No CommentsThere are now 2 new reasons to put your recruitment videos on Youtube.
1. YouTube has announced that they have launched an API that allows website owners to broadcast video content free of charge, through their own sites – a move essentially putting the company in the free hosting bracket.
Companies will be able to make their players “branded” as their own, and through the use of skins, appear proprietary. According to the Google website, YouTube’s API enables users to “upload new videos, edit video metadata such as comments and favorites and modify user settings”. In addition, the client application “can request a list of videos that match specific search criteria, get access to the most popular YouTube videos or retrieve and maintain YouTube user information such as playlists, subscriptions or contacts”.
This means your corporate career site can now host the video on Youtube and expose the video to your audience and Youtube’s in one fell swoop.
2. Integration with TiVo. This makes Youtube videos open to a wider audience.
TiVo Inc., largely responsible for the creation and popularization of digital video recorders (DVRs), will be adding direct access to YouTube videos via TiVo later this year. TiVo users will be able to search, browse, and watch videos on their television sets through their broadband connected TiVo DVRs.
“TiVo’s strategy is to bridge the gap between Web video and television and make as much content available as possible for our subscribers,” Tara Maitra, vice president and general manager for content services for TiVo, told the NY Times.
2 things every corporate recruiter should see & hear about recruiting with social media
March 17, 2008 at 8:01 am | In Social media recruiting | 4 CommentsWe have discovered 2 pieces of media which every recruiter MUST consume if they want to adopt and promote social media in their own company.
The first is a video from Jeremiah Owyang, Forrester Analyst.
Video: Len Devanna on Culture Changes how Corporations Adopt Social Media (3min)
In it Len Devanna, Web Strategist at EMC says the following on getting executive buy-in:
“How are your kids communicating? Are they talking online? Are they twittering? And that generally rings true, that this medium is real…its here to stay and the current generation coming up expects it from a company.”
The second item is a podcast from the Marketing Edge. Its even more revealing than the first.
The social mind of a corporate marketer
In it, Chris Barger, a Social Media Strategist for IBM/GM says this about the ROI of social media:
“This is a relationship building process, sales happen as part of a larger relationship and thats what blogging, podcasting and online social media was intended to do.”
Interviewer Albert Maruggi’s reaction to the above statement is priceless. There is no better explanation of what social media is and is not in this interview.

Are older job seekers using social media sites?
March 11, 2008 at 9:44 am | In Social media recruiting | No CommentsTags: facebook demographics, podcasting demographics, youtube demographics
The answer is absolutely yes. One of the questions we often get from corporate recruiters is whether or not older folks are using sites like Facebook, Youtube, etc. They understand that Gen Y is on them but are unsure of others.
While many of these sites skew to a younger audience, there is a significant audience above age 35. Here’s the proof.
Facebook: 25-35 yr olds are the fastest growing demographic
Youtube: 62% of users are 35 or older (view graphic)
Podcast listenership: Nick Tabbal of comScore said, “While the conventional wisdom says that only young, tech-savvy consumers are downloading and listening to podcasts, there is also a sizable market among 35-to-54-year-olds, indicating that the audience is broader than previously thought”
MySpace: Internet users between the ages of 35-54 now account for 40.6% of the MySpace visitor base
These sites/technology are becoming pervasive across them web and integrating themselves into the lives of almost every American on the web.

More about E&Y’s facebook recruiting strategy
March 9, 2008 at 4:36 pm | In Companies on Facebook, Facebook recruiting tips | No CommentsErnst and Yong’s Facebook group is up over 13,000 members. An impressive number. But I found this quote from their director of recruiting about why it works:
Dan Black, director of recruiting for Ernst & Young used Facebook to connect with students. But he did so in a different way. Lots of questions were asked on E&Y’s wall, and he wrote back in a very personal tone. Realized that this was one of the few channels to have a direct conversation with students.
E&Y definitely gets this social media thing. Its about establishing relationships above all else.

Social Media Recruiting Radio
February 28, 2008 at 12:57 pm | In Announcements | 1 CommentOn Thursday March 6th at 12 noon, we will be starting a new internet radio call-in show about all things social media recruiting.
Ben Yoskovitz (Standoutjobs.com) and Chris Russell will be your hosts. The show will be broadcast twice monthly, probably on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month. Each show will be run an hour from 12-1 eastern standard time to allow people to listen at the lunch hour.
The goal of this program is to educate HR people and recruiters on the evolving social media landscape as it pertains to recruiting. We encourage anyone interested to call in and ask questions about things like Facebook, Youtube, blogging or any other web 2.0 technology that can help you recruit.
Next Thursday’s show will focus on general trends in social media recruiting, including a discussion of our recruiting starfish. Ben will opine on “recruiting as a marketing effort” — which would encompass a discussion on the tools marketing people have at their disposal for selling products and services and how that can be applied to recruiting practices.
So please tell your colleagues and tune in to our first show! It can be found on BlogTalkRadio;
